Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are subject areas that are collectively referred to as STEM. STEM disciplines are inquiry based. The range of subjects that fall under the STEM category are vast. Generally speaking, students in STEM subjects learn skill sets to identify problems, gather information, and evaluate that information to make sense of it. STEM disciplines integrate technology and engineering into science and math. As new technologies continue to emerge, the need for students to pursue degrees in STEM fields is increasing. Careers in STEM fields range from Software Developers to Environmental Scientists. In the United States, filling STEM related jobs is in high demand. There is a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degrees that are STEM designated to prepare students for technical skills that are required for these careers.
International students have made up a large number of students studying in STEM disciplines within U.S. universities both at the undergraduate and graduate level. Students on F-1 visas are eligible for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT). CPT is in the form of an internship, work/study, or cooperative education that is part of a curriculum. OPT is an opportunity to have employment within a job that relates to your major. After finishing a degree, students need to finish their OPT within 14 months. For STEM students, there is an opportunity to receive an OPT extension. F-1 students who receive a STEM degree may apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion OPT.
In addition to reviewing “What is STEM?” and how international students can gain hands on experience in the work force during OPT, this webinar will also discuss the general application processes for STEM programs and some scholarship and funding opportunities for international students entering STEM programs in the U.S.
