The seated Cat Stretch is a very useful tool for releasing the tension that accumulates around the length of the spine, throughout the working day. It is also a very good 'device' if done properly to reconnect us with the use of the abdominals to 'actively' create the curled shape, which will in turn, lend support to stabilise the core and assist in supporting good posture.
An additional intrinsic benefit is that it moves us around ( with awareness ) to break the consistency of posture that we might get 'stuck in' for hours on end. The benefit of just moving around and 'changing' posture must not be underrated - it is very important to do! To do so as a constructive exercise, that teaches you something about where you are in space and mobilises your spinal joints at the same time, delivers multiple benefits.
This exercise is easy to do at regular intervals throughout the day: just push your chair back from the desk and proceed with the smooth, continuous articulations of the spine working through the full range of movement EXCEPT IN THE BACKWARD DIRECTION WITH THE NECK ( as demonstrated in the video ) !!
The full exercise is taught as part of our Postural Education Programs as offered on the Workplace Posture Solutions website.
